CIVIC INTERACTION DESIGN

CHALLENGE

Most mental health platforms primarily focus on individuals living with mental health conditions, often overlooking the critical role of families and caregivers. mentaal.nl addresses this gap by prioritizing support for caregivers, who frequently experience burnout, emotional strain, and lack of guidance while navigating complex care systems. By integrating insights from diverse areas of mental health care—ranging from ADHD in children to crisis intervention and severe psychiatric disorders—the platform aims to create a more inclusive, family-centered approach to mental health support.

DESCRIPTION

Caregivers and families are essential yet under-supported pillars of mental health care. They are often the first to recognize symptoms, manage daily challenges, and provide long-term emotional and practical support, especially in conditions such as ADHD, acute mental health crises, and severe disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Despite this, they frequently lack access to structured resources, education, and professional guidance tailored to their needs. This leads to increased caregiver burden, reduced well-being, and, ultimately, can negatively impact patient outcomes.

The challenge lies in bridging this gap by developing a platform that not only supports individuals with mental health conditions but also equips caregivers with the tools, knowledge, and networks necessary to sustain care. This includes improving accessibility to reliable information, facilitating coordination with healthcare and social services, and promoting early intervention and follow-up strategies. Addressing this unmet need is crucial for building a more holistic, sustainable, and effective mental health ecosystem where both patients and their support systems can thrive.
