Our Journey with VPRO: Transforming Digital Noise Into Deeper Dialogue with AI
In today’s digital storm, where online discourse can often feel like a battleground, how does a cultural pioneer like VPRO stay true to its mission: to make a genuine impact when “everything is shit outside”? They knew AI held promise for aligning with modernity, but the “how” was elusive. That’s where our journey began.
SITUATION – The challenge and opportunity
VPRO thrives on meaningful interaction with its audience. Our initial desk research confirmed it: these connections are the bedrock of their cultural influence. However, a significant portion of this engagement, particularly in comment sections, was marked by negativity, ethical concerns, and raw emotion. Manually navigating this complex landscape of slang, emojis, and diverse languages was becoming an overwhelming task, risking missed opportunities to understand and connect with their most passionate, albeit sometimes angry, viewers. We recognized that these vocal individuals, the ones who cared enough to write, were invaluable. The challenge? To transform this digital friction into constructive dialogue.
TASK – The mission to engage authentically
Our mission crystallized: could we leverage cutting-edge AI not just to manage challenging comments, but to understand the people behind them? We aimed to pioneer a solution that would allow VPRO to:
- Automatically identify and understand the nature of ethically charged comments.
- Move beyond mere moderation to proactive, empathetic engagement.
- Uncover the root causes of audience frustration and anger.
- Explore how AI could de-escalate tension and foster mutual understanding.
- Ultimately, strengthen VPRO’s cultural impact by turning critics into a listened-to part of the conversation.
ACTION – Our AI-powered path to understanding
Our journey unfolded in distinct, innovative phases:

Getting our hands dirty (Data & Detection):
- We first tackled the beast of comment data, building a system to export VPRO’s diverse and often messy comment sections.
- Next, we implemented a sentiment analysis agent to classify comments (positive, negative, neutral).
- Pushing the envelope, we introduced an ethical AI agent (A2A). This wasn’t just about sentiment; the agent learned to flag specific ethical concerns, such as insults, profanity, and threats, by “talking” to the sentiment agent.
- We then automated this entire flagging process using n8n, ensuring any new comment with an ethical issue was instantly highlighted in a Google Sheet – no manual sifting required.

Designing dialogue (Engagement & De-escalation):
- With robust detection in place, we focused on response. Surveys and A/B testing helped us explore various communication methods (pop-ups, chatbots, proactive vs. reactive approaches).
- We researched and selected the most suitable Large Language Models (LLMs) and meticulously crafted different system prompts to see which tones and approaches resonated best with angry audiences.
- The prototype emerges (sprint 4): This culminated in a prototype website featuring AI agents designed for sophisticated interaction. These agents can:
- Communicate empathetically with users who have posted flagged comments.
- Gain a deeper understanding of the reasons behind their anger through intelligent conversation.
- Recommend relevant VPRO video content that might address their concerns or offer new perspectives.
- Allow VPRO makers to dynamically adjust the agent’s tone (e.g., from neutral to more understanding) to test the effectiveness of de-escalation.
- We even began testing these agents against simulations of “abnormal personalities” (e.g., conspiracy theorists, highly stubborn individuals) to refine their capabilities in challenging scenarios.
RESULT – A new frontier for audience connection
Today, VPRO stands equipped not just with a concept, but with a working prototype that transforms how they can interact with their most challenging online feedback. We’ve moved from manual moderation to an intelligent system that:
- Provides actionable insights into the “why” behind audience anger.
- Offers a scalable approach for engaging empathetically and proactively.
- Creates opportunities to de-escalate negativity and guide users towards constructive dialogue.
- Recommends tailored VPRO content, potentially turning detractors into more engaged viewers.
- Empowers VPRO makers with tools to refine their communication strategies based on real-time feedback.
This isn’t just about managing comments; it’s about pioneering a new model of audience engagement powered by ethical AI. It’s about VPRO reinforcing its cultural mandate by truly listening, understanding, and connecting – even when the conversations are tough. This is VPRO, stepping boldly into the future of media, ensuring its impact resonates stronger than ever.
