Project

CO2 Campus (Greenbites)

CHALLENGE – How much CO2 emissions are we contributing from the foods we consume on Campus??

To create a monitoring solution that will enable the Facility Services (FS) department of Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HVA) to measure and track the CO2 footprint of food and drinks. In this challenge, the Roeterseiland campus of the university is our case study.

DESCRIPTION

FS of HvA is responsible for services to support education at the UvA and HvA. Some of the services include Management of educational facilities, Accommodation, Facilities in and around the buildings; including food and drinks among others.

FS aims to enable a transition to sustainable food as part of the sustainability program of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS-HvA).

A part of this process is to be able to track the impact of initiatives and the transition. FS Food & Drink has the ambition to measure and track the CO2 impact of its whole supply chain. The major focus areas include tackling food waste, the protein transition to vegan food offerings, and food security, as well as working with more local and small-scale suppliers.

Target groups and users of this proposed monitoring system are:

  • FS Food & Drink – using the monitoring system
  • Suppliers at Roeterseiland campus – providing inputs for monitoring system
  • UvA/HvA Management, reporting of sustainability goals and progress

An overview of the questions we hope to be able to answer is outlined below:

  • How to get CO2-related data from local suppliers?
  • To what extent can CO2 impact can be extracted from different types of data: purchasing data, sales data etc.?
  • How to benchmark/do a baseline measurement of current offerings?
  • How to create an impact measurement methodology that can be progressively evolved?

OUR SOLUTION

We have developed a prototype for measuring CO2 emissions at UvA/HvA with such features as :

  • Multiple options for entering purchase data
  • CO2 benchmarking as a baseline
  • Ingredient level CO2-measurements
  • Measuring ability with varied data excluding purchases

SPRINT 1

Sprint 1 was our first foray into the subject of developing a monitoring system to measure and track CO2 for FS and its users. Our major aim was to dive into the problem and get a broader perspective of the current situation by engaging all the stakeholders in the food and drinks service of the HvA. We engaged the major players in the FS food and drink chain via 1-on-1 interviews both physically and online. We had a conversation with CIRFOOD who is the major contractor of FS for food and catering in HVA. We also visited the local food suppliers on the Roeterseiland campus to speak with them.

SPRINT 2

In this sprint, we set out to find possible insights from previous projects which can serve as a source of inspiration and guide for our next steps. We wanted to find trailblazers in our community who can share expert information from their own experiences on the field.

Sprint 3

This sprint was focused on ideation and design using the insights already gained from our stakeholders and discovering opportunities for intervention. We carried out case study research to find monitoring tools with desirable features (must-haves and should-haves) for our own web platform considering user needs and proceeded to design our own concept.

Sprint 4

In this sprint, we focused on testing our prototype with our users (usability testing) via one-on-one interviews and prototype presentation. We also worked on developing a minimally functional prototype to demonstrate our ideas to our partner.

Sprint 5

In this final sprint, we made changes in our Hi-Fidelity prototype based on feedback from user testing. Our Hi-Fidelity prototype was our final product and solution for the challenge we received at the beginning. We also spent a significant part of the sprint preparing for our project showcase.
