Migration Challenge Summer School (Amsterdam, Austin, Milan, Montevideo and Kyoto)

As much as Migration creates new opportunities, it also creates challenges. These stretch across political boundaries and demand international collaboration to be solved.

Would you like to learn how complex international challenges can be approached through cross-cultural collaboration and design? Then join our fun, impactful and insightful “Migration Challenge” Summer School.

What?

This is a two-week challenge summer school, taking place from July 8 – 19 in five cities: Amsterdam, Austin, Milan, Montevideo and Kyoto. You will work locally in a multidisciplinary team on a global challenge in the Amsterdam context. At the same time, you will collaborate with the others teams across the world, sharing insights and learning from each other’s contexts, challenges and ways of working and designing.

The assignment is provided by Makers Unite, a platform of makers that connects EU locals and refugees through co-design. You will not only work on a relevant local city challenge, but also make a field-trip(s) directly related to your challenge to develop an accurate real-life level of understanding of the issue.

What you will be working on

This two-week intensive Summer School will focus on social innovation, collaboration & (digital) design to solve a migration challenge in Amsterdam with local and global partners. During the 2 weeks you will be working intensively in a team with diverse, multicultural and skillful teammates. An experienced coach from the Digital Society School will support you and guide you through the design process.

Meanwhile, the Design Across Cultures online course will connect you to the other teams working on this same topic. You will learn what it means to design across cultures and to work with other teams across the world in constructive ways. You will explore the work of others, identifying shared challenges and recognizing differences, and learn how to see your local challenges in the bigger global picture.
