Project

How can AI sustain the broadcast industry?

CHALLENGE

How can we make public broadcasting more sustainable?

What would the ‘programs’ of a radically sustainable NPO look like?

Which new (sustainable) AI-driven technological solutions can we use for this?

We, a team from the Digital Society School, will conduct research and develop prototypes for 5 months to find an answer to these questions for VPRO.

ALBERT, the tool that public broadcasters use to check the CO2 footprint of their programs, will be used as a starting point. VPRO is trying to integrate sustainability by design into its working methods using AI.

Main goals:

  • Create a ‘Sustainability by Design’ framework that makes eco-friendly thinking part of every step of making media—right from brainstorming to hitting ‘publish.’
  • Build an interactive tool that gets everyone on board (writers, producers, techies, you name it!) to think green from the very start.
  • Develop a cool way to measure how sustainable media content is—tracking everything from how it’s made to how it impacts audiences long after it airs.

In the end, we want:

  • To shrink the carbon footprint of public media without losing the magic of creative, quality content.
  • To get everyone in the media world pumped about sustainability and how they can make a difference in their everyday roles.
  • To bring in fresh, AI-powered ideas that make both sustainability and storytelling better and more exciting.
  • To make sustainable thinking part of the creative process right from the get-go—baked into a tool that’s fun and easy to use!
